Although Native Americans inhabited the enclave now known as Hope Ranch as far back as 6,000+ years, the upscale community’s contemporary history began in the mid-1800′s when it was named for government agent Thomas Hope. He and his wife purchased the ‘Ranch’ in 1861 for $8,000, brought in 5,000 head of sheep to graze the land, started a prosperous wool business and built the Hope House in 1875. Later, the Hope Ranch Homes Association was formed to plan, maintain and protect the newly subdivided 1,850 acres within the 1924 boundaries and used the Hope House as its headquarters until 1962.
Laguna Blanca School was founded in 1933 on 22 acres within the ranch, and includes lacrosse, soccer and baseball fields and remains a very well regarded private school to this day. Hope Ranch also has a public school, Vieja Valley Elementary, which registered an impressive 2013 API score of 881.
Approximately 700 homes – on 788 parcels ranging in size from one to 35 acres – rest amidst the community’s 2,000 acres of verdant hills, often stunning landscaping and magnificent ocean views. Traditional California ranch-style homes and luxurious estates share equal and easy access to a host of amenities. Known for its abundance of recreational activities and ‘country in the city’ ambiance, Hope Ranch is mere minutes from distinctive shopping, restaurants, churches, schools and more.
In addition to its beautiful private beach and its ancillary facilities, the enclave hosts tennis courts as well as the exclusive La Cumbre Golf and Country Club with its impressive and historic 18-hole course built around beautiful Laguna Blanca. Over thirty miles of horse riding trails meander throughout the area and lead to the beach, and the Earl Warren Showgrounds – famous for its equine shows and facilities – is just five minutes away by car.
