Historically significant, as one of the largest villages of the Chumash Tribe of Native Americans, what is now Goleta was first visited by European explorers in the 16th century. Evolving through periods of ranching, agriculture, oil and gas production and military use, the community is now a center for high-tech firms, is a bedroom community for adjacent Santa Barbara, and is home to the extensive campus of the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) and the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport.
In 2014, UCSB was ranked #15 in a list of the Top National Universities by theWashington Monthly magazine. In 2014-2015, UCSB was ranked #37 on the world’s top 200 universities by Times Higher Education. In early 2015 UCSB was ranked seventh out of 500 major world universities http://www.leidenranking.com/default.aspx. UCSB has become one of nation’s, and the world’s, most distinguished public institutions and has been named by the Graham/Diamond study as the second-best public research university in the nation. In 2013 the highest API scoring schools in the Goleta Union Elementary District were Mountain View @ 953, Foothill @ 930 and Kellogg @ 914.
Goleta also has three public golf facilities from which to choose. Sandpiper, which has been rated one of the top 100 public courses in the nation by Golf Digest, is located along the Pacific Ocean with breathtaking views. Three of the California Central Coast’s best beaches — Goleta, El Capitan State Beach and Refugio State Beach — offer something for everyone.
Goleta’s approximately 77,000 residents occupy modest neighborhood homes, condominiums and gated communities and are known for supporting and promoting their schools, churches and community organizations, as well as the town’s family-friendly parks, restaurants and other amenities.
