The Upper Riviera in the City of Santa Barbara extends above Alameda Padre Serra (APS) to the top of the hills, between Las Alturas Road and Mission Canyon Road. If you came to Santa Barbara in the early 1900's, the most prestigious areas were the Upper East and the Upper Riviera. While the Upper East was easily accessible by foot or horse, the Upper Riviera required walking or riding up hills. Why would you want to go through the effort or getting up a hill? For the postcard views! To make it easier, the City designated many walking paths throughout the Riviera, called 'paseos,' which still exist today.
