Santa Barbara - Baja Mesa

Santa Barbara - Baja Mesa Home
The Baja Mesa (translation: Lower Table) is the flatter portion of the general Mesa neighborhood in the City of Santa Barbara which extends from the vicinity of Cliff Drive to the Ocean. This area not only includes the Mesa Shopping area around Meigs Road and Santa Barbara City College, but also a range of homes from oceanfront estates to bungalows. To top off the sometimes eclectic mixture, some older structures were moved from downtown to Mesa lots when the 101 Freeway was built through Santa Barbara in the late 1950's. The first houses built on the Mesa were in the 1920's, but then stopped when a mini-oil boom made drilling oil wells seem more profitable than building houses. By the end of the 1920's the boom went bust, but development on the Mesa did not start in earnest until the late 1940's with the building of the Marine Terrace area. Shoreline Park and Ledbetter Beach top off the natural allure of this neighborhood. Check 93109 for house/condo values, home sales graph and social/economic data.
