The unincorporated area of Montecito is located just East of the City of Santa Barbara nestled on a two mile wide strip of land between the sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean and the foothills of the Los Padres National Forest. 'Montecito' is Spanish for "little woods" or "little mountains" and offers the feeling of a rural retreat, but yet has a metropolitan edge with its two villages: the smaller Upper Montecito Village along East Valley Road and the larger Lower Montecito Village along Coast Village Road. Around 10,000 people can call Montecito "home", and this number is not bound to change anytime soon with the very limited allocation of new building permits doled out each year. |
Montecito enjoys a temperate climate which drew wealthy families from all over the country starting in the early 1900's as a winter retreat and continuing today as a place to live and enjoy a the Californian lifestyle. The early families came to Montecito to build great estates for their winter visits and many of these palatial residences exist to this day. Montecito's premier area is called the "Golden Quadrangle"; an area loosely bound by Hot Springs Road, East Mountain Drive, Park Lane and East Valley Road and remains sought after due to its "perfect weather". |
Montecito has around 10,000 residents (per 2000 Census) including many artists, celebrities and industry icons who all seem to enjoy the casual living in this spectacular place. Montecito also boasts two of the best public elementary school districts in Santa Barbara County; Montecito Union and Cold Springs whose test scores consistently rank among the best in all of California. |
A number of fine galleries along Coast Village Road can be strung together for a leisurely art walk, with plenty of cafes and restaurants available for refreshments. Do not miss a walk at sunset along Butterfly Beach, just across Channel Drive from the famous Biltmore Hotel. If you are there at sunset, you will not be disappointed.
