In 1846, Goleta was part of a 4,400 acre ranch granted by the Mexican government to Daniel Hill with a village laid out and built in 1875. 'Goleta' is Spanish for Schooner. The Goleta Valley was, and is, a prosperous and fertile farming region which is located just West and contiguous to the City of Santa Barbara. The transformation into an urban bedroom community, with the majority of our area's high technology firms and shopping areas, really began in 1954 when the campus of the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) moved to nearly 1,000 oceanfront acres; the aerospace industry soon followed. As of August 2009 U.S. News & World Report ranks UCSB as 11th in the "Top 50 Public Universities" and 42th of all in the "Best National Universities". UCSB has become one of nation's most distinguished public institutions and has been named by the Graham/Diamond study as the second-best public research university in the nation.
The Goleta Valley is now the primary location for the high technology firms in the Santa Barbara area, including diversified electronic, telecommunications and medical devices manufacturing. Coupled with the laboratories and resources of the University of California provides, the Goleta Valley maintains an employment base that is larger than its residential base will support, so many commute into the area from Ventura and the Santa Ynez Valley. Just over 77,500 people can call Goleta home.
When it comes to golf, Goleta has four public golf facilities to choose from. Sandpiper, which has been rated one of the top 25 public courses in the nation by Golf Digest, is located along the Pacific Ocean with breathtaking views. Just West of Goleta along the Gaviota Coast, you will find El Capitan State Beach and Refugio State Beach, both offering truly unique campgrounds and atmospheres.
